World War II in Pictures- After 24 days of the most bitter battle in the history of the Marine Corps to that date, on 14 March 1945, the colors were raised once again on Iwo Jima to signify the occupation of the island, although the battle was still raging in the north.

The official end of the campaign would not be until 14 days later, on 26 March.
