From 1712 to 1918, St. Petersburg acted as the capital of Russia. Peter the Great had moved the capital in his efforts to westernize the Russian Empire. The Bolshevik Revolution prompted Vladimir Lenin to make the decision on 5 March 1918 to move the capital back to Moscow. This was disguised as temporary but Moscow has remained the capital ever since. Picture is of the Church of the Saviour on Spilt Blood- construction finished in 1907.
