Mysterious Origins- Presidential Inaugural Balls: Dolley Madison, wife of James Madison, was the first president's wife to attend inauguration ceremonies and the first First Lady to host an official inaugural ball, on March 4, 1809.

Attire: President Madison wore a suit made entirely of American grown, carded, woven, cut, and sewed wool.

Weather: Cloudy, it rained the day before, leaving the streets muddy.

James Madison invited the United States Marine Band to play for the inaugural ball, and they have played ever since.

The inauguration ball was held at Long's Hotel and tickets for the event cost $4, equivalent to $74 today. Dolly Madison had experience in planning events, as she had played White House hostess for President Jefferson on several social occasions. In fact, Dolly Madison was the first woman to be referred to as the First Lady.
