The Eurostar Channel Tunnel was officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II and President François Mitterrand in a ceremony held in Calais on the 6th May 1994. The Queen traveled through the tunnel to Calais on a Eurostar train, which stopped nose to nose with the train that carried President Mitterrand from Paris.
