World War II HIstory- In WWII, gasoline was rationed - primarily to save rubber in tires. Gas rationing began on the US East Coast 22 July 1942, since U-boat sinkings of oil tankers had created a gas shortage. Gas rationing went nationwide 1 December 1942 and lasted until 18 August 1945.
