History in Pictures- 27 March 1912, the first cherry tree (a gift from Japan) was planted in Washington, DC.
Helen Herron Taft and the Viscountess Chinda, wife of the Japanese
Ambassador, planted two Yoshino cherry trees on the northern bank of the
Tidal Basin, about 125 feet south of what is now Independence Avenue,
SW.
