Grammar Guides and Goofs: Mind-Bogglin Mispronounced Words

Escape- Pronounced es cape NOT ex scape or exs scape.  Many people feel it is only those who are uneducated that make this ghastly mispronunciation.  Unfortunately, it occurs more often in educated people who picked up a bad habit in their youth and never "heard" the mistake in order to learn to correct it in their speech.  Many English words begin with "ex" and that is perhaps how this beastly mispronunciation came about.

Frustrated- Simply put, there is no "L" in frustrated.  Some may get flustered, but there is no such word as flustrated.

Gentlemen (man)- there is a "t" in the singular and plural words.  Often, the word is mispronounced with a silent "t" and is heard as "genelmen or genelman."  Don't forget the "T."  The same mistake is made with the word, "Gentle."  Do not say "genel."

Paraplegic- Par-a-plee-gic is the proper pronunciation, noting that there are four syllables, not five as there are in the mispronounced par-a-puh-lee-jic.  This mispronounced word most likely comes from the frequent misspelling of the word as parapalegic instead of paraplegic.

Persevere- This is another word that is commonly misspelled and that is most likely the reason for the mispronunciation.  Say pur-suh-veer not pur-sur-veer.  There is no "r" after the "se."
