History in Pictures- 2 April 1792, The Coinage Act was Passed
The Coinage Act proclaimed the establishment of the United States Mint and became law on 2 April 1792. Philadelphia was the nation's capital at that time, so the first mint was built there. April 2, 1792 The U.S. Congress passes the Coinage Act to regulate coins. The Act defined that coins would be minted of gold, silver and copper. It also stated the denominations, values & descriptions of the coins to be minted.
