Allied prisoners of war in the city, frustrated at their position being being bombed, wrote the phrase "Extract Digit" (meaning 'pull your finger out of your a**') on the rooftop because they felt it was clear slang that would indicate to pilots that their message 'Japs Gone' wasn't a Japanese ruse designed to confuse the attackers. The Japanese had indeed already left the city!
