Soviet missile shoots down the US U2 spy plane near Degtyarsk on 1 May 1960.On 1 May 1960, the Soviets shot down an American spy plane that was part of the Central Intelligence Agency's U-2 program, and took pilot Francis Gary Powers prisoner. Powers was interrogated extensively by the KGB for months before he made a forced confession and a public apology. Three-and-a-half months later, Powers was convicted of espionage against the Soviet Union and was sentenced to a total of 10 years, three years in imprisonment followed by seven years of hard labor. 

In Berlin, Germany on February 10, 1962, Powers was freed, exchanged in a spy swap for Soviet KGB Colonel Vilyam Fisher, who had been captured by the FBI and put in jail for espionage.
