World War II in Pictures- Polish transit depot at Westerplatte attacked on 1 September 1939 it fought for over a week, despite attacks from the air and sea bombardment, and many attempts to assault.
September 1, 1939, 4:45 a.m. German drill ship "Schleswig-Holstein" opens fire on the polish bunkers at the Westerplatte, a woody peninsula near Danzig.
